California Teacher'S Association Scholarships







The California Teacher's Association (CTA) began in 1863 as a professional organization for public school educators in the state of California. As of 2001, the association boasted more than 325,000 members. The association engages in numerous activities, including public advocacy on educational issues at the state and federal level. Through its charitable foundation, the CTA sponsors numerous scholarships for both high school students and adults.


Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship








The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship provides tuition assistance for individuals who are members of recognized minority groups, such as Blacks, Hispanics, Asians or Native Americans. Only members of CTA and their spouses, children or other dependents are eligible for the award. To qualify, applicants must have received admission into or be actively enrolled in a teacher preparation program. Members of the Student CTA organization can also apply for the award, provided they are California residents and remain members until the scholarship funds are distributed. The amount of the awards varies based upon funding.


CTA Scholarship for Members and Dependent Children


Each year, the CTA Scholarship for Members program awards five scholarships to active CTA members who are pursuing a postsecondary degrees in education. The award is based on academic merit and requires the submission of a personal statement of career goals and letters of recommendation. As of 2010, the awards paid up to $3,000. The CTA Scholarship for Dependent Children provides tuition funding for children of CTA members who are high school seniors bound for college. Students may intend to pursue any major, but must have a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average to qualify. The scholarships awarded $5,000 as of 2010.


L. Gordon Bittle Memorial Scholarship for Student CTA


The L. Gordon Bittle Memorial Scholarship for Student CTA offers funding for members of the Student CTA organization. Applicants must be enrolled in an education-related program at the undergraduate or graduate level and be active members of the organization. Students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA for all high school coursework and submit academic transcripts. Two letters of recommendation and a personal statement of goals are also required. As of 2010, the amount of the scholarship was $3,000. For 2011, the CTA intended to award three Bittle scholarships.


Del A. Weber Scholarship for Dependent Children Attending Continuation High School/Alternative Programs


The Del A. Weber Scholarship for Dependent Children Attending Continuation High School/Alternative Programs provides funding for students who are attending continuing high school or other secondary-school-level programs to prepare for a standard diploma. Students must be the dependent children of a CTA member and have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average to qualify. Applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation and a statement of goals for consideration. The amount of the scholarships varies based upon available funds and the cost of recipients' academic programs.
