Scholarships For Charity Work

Painting is one form of scholarship community charity work.

Scholarships for charity work come from individuals and organizations alike that share the same core value -- the importance of giving back to the community. Scholarship categories differ. Some scholarships are service-based, with mandatory charity work specified. Other scholarship donors select their recipients based on community service track records and expect this to continue through the scholarship period. The scholarship donors are themselves outstanding charitable work leaders.

Bonner Scholars Program

The Bonner Scholars Program ensures that students attending college or university to derive the benefits of a fine education have parallel opportunities to serve their communities. In partnership with selected institutions, the Corella & Bertram F. Bonner Foundation sponsors this nationwide service-based scholarship program. Among other program commitments, scholars perform about 10 hours of community service a week during the school year, and take on a full-time summer service internship. Financial need is a major consideration in awarding these scholarships. Scholarship values are undisclosed.

Discover Scholarship

Discover Financial Services and its employees provide community support where they work and live, through donations and volunteer time, particularly for educational initiatives. High school juniors nationwide can apply for the Discover Scholarship if they have a minimum 2.75 GPA for the ninth and 10th grades. Community service accomplishments are central to the award, and so is leadership quality. The scholarship is available for any type of post-high school education or training, including trade or technical schooling or college or university degree programs. As at 2011, the value of the scholarship was $25,000.

Zdenek Bakala Foundation

Zdenek Bakala emigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia in search of a better education and life, working hard to achieve both goals. The Zdenek Bakala Foundation provides scholarships to help other Czech students to follow the same path to higher education, primarily in the U.S. and Great Britain. The Foundation looks for students with dedication to academic excellence but who also participate fully in the community, doing charity work as students, and ideally for the rest of their lives. The foundation maintains contact with its scholars throughout the scholarship period. Year-end reviews of scholarship recipients require evidence that these students made the most of their scholarships during the preceding year. Applications call for a 1,000-word personal essay on a set topic, a letter of recommendation, an affidavit of family income, a cost estimate, standardized test results, a list of extracurricular activities and GPA. The scholarship value depends on individual costs.

Bruce Lee Scholarship

The Bruce Lee Foundation offers the Bruce Lee Scholarship honoring the late martial arts film star's legacy. According to the foundation, the scholarship is for students who play an active part in community service and extracurricular activities and appreciate Lee's passion for education. Students who are 16 years or older are eligible. Selection criteria also include work experience and general knowledge of Bruce Lee. The scholarship is for studies at a two-year college, four-year university, or licensed trade and vocational school. It covers tuition, books, fees, and room and board. As at 2010, the value of the scholarship was $1,000.
