Fill Out Graduation Announcements

Ask your child for his input in the graduation announcement.

Graduation announcements share in the joy and pride of your child's accomplishment with the community, family and friends. Newspapers of all circulation levels announce graduations particularly during the spring, some require a fee of a few dollars. Completing the graduation announcement form isn't difficult but does require thoughtful care. You want to present your child's achievements and plans accurately, with proper wording, grammar and appropriate content. Filling out the form with your child's input ensures a published announcement that everyone can be proud of.

Instructions

1. Go to the community section of the newspaper you want to publish the graduation announcement. Click on "graduation announcements." Other possible titles include "milestones" or "educational achievements." The linked page typically contains an electronic submission form. Smaller newspapers may require you to print the announcement and complete it by hand before mailing it to the newspaper office.

2. Fill in your child's complete name. Confirm that he wants to use his full first, middle and last name, especially if he sometimes uses nicknames or initials for formal documents, such as "A.J. Martin," or "Allen J. Martin."

3. Fill in your relationship to the child and any other appropriate parents, stepparents or guardians. Double check titles with individuals listed.

4. Write in your child's major and minor or academic focus if the announcement is for a college graduation. Check the department title on the school's website to avoid mistakenly reporting that your son majored in international relations when his major was actually international affairs.

5. Describe any extracurricular and academic achievements in the space provided. Possible affiliations or accomplishments include sports teams, research positions, campus jobs and student organizations. Highlight his most important involvements by discussing the exact wording with your child.

6. Describe future plans. For a high school graduation, write the future college name and location or a brief description of his gap-year activities such as, "Michael will spend a gap-year in Zambia working in a local school." For a college graduation announcement, list the future employer, graduate school or intended area of vocation, for example, "Michael will move to Colorado and pursue a career in forestry."
