Grants For African American Students

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has always stood by its motto: "a mind is a terrible thing to waste." In the spirit of this sentiment, African American students around the globe are seeking educational opportunities. For those students who require financial aid or would like to explore the possibility of scholarships, there are many grants designed specifically for minorities who intend to have a bright future.

Professional Organizations

There are many professional organizations that dedicate themselves to contributing to the development of African American scholars by providing grants and scholarships. For example, The National Black Nurses Association awards approximately twelve grants to African American students enrolled in a nursing program. The grants vary in amount, ranging from $500 to $2,000. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants also awards grants to students enrolled in an accounting program. Grant awards are based on academic standing and financial need.

HBCU

There are many historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) that provide grant opportunities for minority students. In the U.S., there are approximately 39 universities that offer services for prospective students. These include Morehouse College and Spelman College. Morehouse offers grants in the areas of academics, music and athletics. Spelman provides grants for African American women in academics and specific majors. Both of these universities are located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Major Corporations

Major corporations such as Coca-Cola and AT&T have implemented grants in the past several years to promote academic excellence and diversity. Students interested in learning more information should visit the company websites to see what kind of grants and scholarships are offered. For example, Coca-Cola has awarded scholarships totaling more than $35 million.

Federal Grants

There are a number of federal programs that offer grants to minority students. Among the available grants are Pell Grants, National SMART Grants, and the Academic Competitiveness Grant. Minority students interested in these opportunities must complete a Free Application for Student Aid.

Ron Brown Scholar Program

African American students interested in attending college may also apply for the Ron Brown Scholar Program. The program awards up to $40,000 in financial aid, selecting students based on financial need, academic standing, and involvement in the community. Students interested in applying for this program should visit ronbrown.org to fill out an application.
