Make African Wooden Tikis

Make a tiki in the shape of the African continent.

Show your pride in both your fraternity or sorority and your ethnic heritage with a custom handmade wooden tiki in the shape of Africa -- a symbol to keep for years to come. You can wear your tiki around your neck, put it on your wall, or hang it from your rearview mirror. The size of the Africa medallion is up to you, as long as it is large enough to fit the Greek letters. You can cut your own Greek letters, but to simplify the project, purchase them pre-cut at craft stores or specialty fraternity/sorority retailers.

Instructions

1. Do an image search for Africa. Save and resize your chosen image of the continent to the exact desired size of the tiki; print it out. Alternatively, you can trace the outline using an image from a book or a world map.

2. Cut out the Africa shape to make a template. Place the template on the wood and trace around it.

3. Cut out the shape using a scroll saw, which allows you to make tight turns and create detailed edges.

4. Drill a hole near the top of the tiki.

5. Sand the edges of the tiki, and then paint or varnish the shape as desired. Paint or varnish the Greek letters, if necessary. Allow it to dry completely.

6. Glue the Greek letters to the Africa tiki using wood glue. Allow the glue to dry completely.

7. Cut the leather cord to your desired length. String the tiki through the cord. When it is centered, tie a knot above the hole in the tiki.

8. String wooden beads on the cord, if desired. Tie the ends in a double knot.
