Sometimes life gets the best of you, and your grades slip a little. If you can't meet the financial aid requirements for your university, you can lose your funding and your ability to continue taking classes. Write a letter of appeal to get your aid reinstated. Usually, the reinstatement is conditional and you have to get better grades in the semester following the appeal. Be honest and offer an actionable plan for the future to get your financial aid reinstated.
Instructions
1. Address the financial aid counselor who will consider your appeal. If you don't know his name, call your financial aid office and ask for the name of the person to whom you're writing.
2. Explain why you're writing the letter to show you're aware of the seriousness of the situation. Demonstrate how losing your financial aid will adversely impact your education.
3. Explain why you were unable to get good grades. If you were having a rough time with a family situation, describe it. If you were working too many hours to cover what aid couldn't, explain it. Give an understandable reason as to why you were unable to make satisfactory marks.
4. Describe your plan to keep it from happening again. If it was a mental stressor, consider getting counseling on campus. If it was a medical stressor, discuss your treatment. If it was an outside influence, explain how you'll better balance school and work---perhaps weekly tutoring sessions.
5. Sign the letter. Attach it, along with any supporting documentation, to the required form and return it to the financial aid office.
