Medicine is a very demanding career. There are many ways a student can start to prepare for this career long before applying to medical school. A student should get as much real-world information about the day-to-day life of a physician before deciding to apply to medical school.
Instructions
1. Purchase a medical dictionary and start to familiarize yourself with the language of medicine. Spend at least one hour per week perusing the dictionary to learn new medical words.
2. Sign up to do volunteer work at your local hospital. Hospital volunteers gain invaluable knowledge about medical careers while going about the hospital doing their tasks. Also, volunteers get to know doctors and nurses, who may serve as references in future job searches. Volunteer work in the hospital emergency room will give you a crash course in the reality of medical careers.
3. Purchase a Latin dictionary. Many medical words have their origins in Latin. Learning Latin will help you better understand the language used in medical school classes.
4. Read medical journals. Many public libraries offer medical journals in their reading room. You can also read articles from medical journals on the Internet.
5. Talk to doctors in the field you are interested in pursuing. Gather information about the day-to-day duties of a doctor in this field. Ask doctors if they would recommend a career in their field, and what skills are most needed to be a successful doctor in their specialty.
