Many art and design schools offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in industrial design and related fields. Industrial design degree holders work in a wide variety of fields, including consumer product design, medical, industrial and manufacturing equipment design, transportation design and design education.
Art Center College of Design
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, commonly referred to simply as "Art Center," was founded in 1930. As of 2009, this private art college had about 1,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students. The school offers a two-year graduate program in industrial design leading toward the Master of Science degree. The school also offers undergraduate design programs in entertainment design, environmental design and transportation design, all leading toward the Bachelor of Science degree. Undergraduates begin work in their chosen specialization during the first semester. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked Art Center College of Design 11th overall among fine arts graduate schools, and first in the industrial design field.

Rhode Island School of Design
The Rhode Island School of Design, commonly referred to as RISD, was founded in 1877. As of 2009, this private college had about 1,900 undergraduates and 400 graduate students. The school offers an undergraduate program in industrial design leading toward the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, as well as a two-year Master of Industrial Design degree program for graduate students. Other related design departments at RISD include architecture, interior architecture, furniture design and landscape architecture. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked RISD first overall among fine arts graduate schools and second in the industrial design field.

Carnegie Mellon School of Design
The Carnegie Mellon School of Design offers a variety of degree programs, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program in industrial design and graduate programs leading toward either Master of Design in information design or interaction design and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in design. Carnegie Mellon's School of Design and Department of Mechanical Engineering collaborate to offer a graduate program in product development, leading toward the Master of Product Development degree. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked Carnegie Mellon seventh overall among fine arts graduate schools and third in the industrial design field.

Pratt Institute
The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn was founded in 1887, and, as of 2009, had about 3,000 undergraduates and 1,600 graduate students. Pratt's School of Art and Design offers a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree program for undergraduates. Students in this program can choose to concentrate in one of six different areas, including product, furniture, transportation, exhibit, tabletop and general design. Pratt also offers a Master of Industrial Design degree program for graduate students, with concentrations in the same areas. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Pratt Institute 15th overall among fine arts graduate schools, and fourth in the industrial engineering field.
