The American Psychological Association, better known as APA style in academic work such as research papers, is the one of the most commonly used citation formats. Using the APA style correctly is important because it is a contributing factor to the overall grade on any paper. Here are some tips on cite sources in the APA style correctly.
Instructions
1. Use the author and date style for in-text citations. In-text citations generally go at the end of a sentence like this (Dickens, 1908). If you use the author's name in a sentence, the citation looks like this: "According to Dickens (1908) it was the best of times."
2. Apply the same author and date style to the Works Cited page. The format for the Works Cited page for a book is: author/date/book title/place of publication/name of publisher. Here is an example: "Dickens, C. (1908). A Tale of Two Cities. New York: Harcourt Mifflin."
3. Write the following format for citing books with multiple authors: "Jones, K., & Smith, B. (2008). A Study by Jones and Smith. Chicago: Harcourt Mifflin."
4. Know cite electronic sources. To cite web pages use the following format: Author/publication date/Title/date retrieved/full URL web address. Here's an example: "Jones, K. (2008). A Study in Dickens. Retrieved January 1, 2008, from http://www.charlesdickens.com."
