Start A New Fraternity Chapter

Greek organizations are an important networking tool in a university setting.

Starting a fraternity chapter is an excellent way to focus the attention of a group of individuals toward community projects and university life. Many fraternities have a national support network that can assist you in achieving your goal of creating a new chapter. Creating a new fraternity chapter is also a solid resume builder for any future community positions you want to pursue.

Instructions

1. Create a list of names encompassing individuals interested in your fraternity. Ensure the list includes relevant contact information, including email addresses, phone numbers and a mailing address if possible. This list will serve as the basis for your "interest group," or a collection of individuals interested in starting an organization.

2. Contact your student life coordinator on your university campus. This coordinator will provide you with information on the necessary requirements, rules and restrictions regarding Greek organizations and the university. You should be aware that some colleges and universities do not endorse or support fraternity and sorority organizations.

3. Decide on a national fraternity organization that best fits the values and beliefs of your collective interest group. Fraternities have mission statements that may specialize in certain community work or university contributions.

4. Contact your selected fraternity to obtain all necessary information and paperwork needed to start your own chapter. Often, fraternities have specific guidelines toward the type of insurance and fees that the organization must obtain.

5. Recruit new members for your fraternity by participating in the "rush week" of your university's Greek system. Contact your student life coordinator to ensure that your fraternity chapter is listed in the student organization's directory.

6. Create a fee structure in your fraternity that ensures all fraternity membership fees and participation expenses are covered, as well as any rent you may need in order to secure a house for your organization.
