Assessing your leadership abilities helps you understand ways to improve.
Assessing your own leadership skills or the leadership abilities of associates within your organization is a difficult but necessary task. Assessment requires a close look at your management approach and the results of your performance. Understanding how your leadership ability affects your bottom line is important to the success of your business. There are several free assessment tools, available online, that may give you a better understanding of how you are performing as a leader.
SBA and SCORE
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and its resource partner, SCORE offer several free workshops, research and other tools to small business managers and entrepreneurs. One of the free assessment quizzes available through SCORE's website helps you answer the question "Are You a Good Leader?" The assessment is fairly short and a poor outcome will refer you to contact your local SCORE chapter to find out about the free leadership mentoring available in your area.
Ethical Leadership
The Center for Ethical Leadership focuses on your ability to lead with integrity and sound ethical judgment. The organization developed an exercise that will help you identify and assess the core principles that drive you in your decision making processes. The assessment encourages you to analyze your core principles and integrate them into your professional and personal life. The assessment allows you to narrow down two primary core principles, under the idea that having only two core principles will make it easier to remain mindful of them consistently.
Leadership Matrix Assessment
Donald Clark has maintained Big Dog and Little Dog's Performance Juxtaposition, a website that for more than 15 years has been providing information and tools pertaining to performance, learning, training and leadership. Among the many available tools is a Leadership Training and Development Outline that includes either a short or long version of an introductory leadership assessment test, as well as a Leadership Matrix Survey, a 45-minute questionnaire used to assess your leadership style.
