Graduate Music Schools

Get a graduate degree in music to learn more about music.


Like with other graduate programs, students applying to graduate music schools in the United States should already have an undergraduate degree. The requirement to enter the graduate program for music varies by school. In addition to submitting letters of recommendation and official transcripts, you may be required to audition as well. Financial aid, scholarships and stipends are available at most colleges and universities to help with the cost of tuition.


Eastman School of Music


Eastman School of Music is located in Rochester, New York. Established in 1921, the school faculty is made up of over 130 highly recognized performers, composers, scholars and educators, and there are about 400 students as of 2011. Degree programs include a Master of Arts in Composition, Ethnomusicology, Music Education, Music Theory Pedagogy, Musicology, or Theory, a Master of Music, a Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition, Conducting, Early Music, Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media, Music Education, Performance and Literature or Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music, a Doctor of Philosophy in Composition, Music Education, Musicology or Theory, and a graduate dual degree.

Manhattan School of Music


Manhattan School of Music offers graduate degrees in four areas: classical, jazz, orchestral performance and solo performance. A dual degree is also offered at the master's level, available to current and prospective students. About 275 faculty and 800 students from 40 countries make up the school as of 2011.

University of Alabama School of Music


The University of Alabama School of Music is located in west-central Alabama. Founded in 1831, it has over 35 full-time faculty and 350 music majors. Graduate students can earn a Master of Music, Master of Arts in Music Education Concentrations for Instrumental Music or Choral/Voice Music, Doctor of Music Arts, Education Specialist in Music Education, or Doctor of Education.
