Certification

The test contains questions about food protection, preparing food, maintenance of equipment, sanitation standards, and cleaning of utensils. You must pass the certification test, and then you have five years to display the certification before a retest is needed.

Management Training

According to the BLS, many large chain grocery stores put their managers through management training prior to starting to qualify for the position. During training, potential managers learn maintain a budget, schedule employees, and implement merchandising throughout the store. It is also required that they understand basics about human resources, strategic planning, chain management, and food safety. To qualify as a manager, it is essential that you have leadership ability, effective communication skills, and are able to perform even while under pressure.

Education

While not all groceries expect their managers to have a lengthy education, many large grocery stores will consider only those who have college training. Grocery chain owners often look for those who have received a bachelor's degree in food marketing and management or business administration, or even request that managers graduate from a community college or technical institute. To be qualified, many grocery stores look for manager applicants who have experience in the food industry, as well as those in retail sales or other management positions.
