Scholarships For Graduating Seniors

Graduating seniors have a plethora of possibilities for scholarships. If your parents or grandparents were part of the U.S. Foreign Services, you may qualify for USFS scholarships. If your parents are union members, many unions offer need-based scholarships. However, there are many scholarships available for people with no connections to larger organizations.

Signet Essay Contest

The publisher Penguin books offers a $1,000 scholarship for five high school juniors and graduating seniors. In addition to the scholarship, Penguin will donate a collection of Penguin's Signet Classics to the winner's school library. To apply for this scholarship, students must read a specific book and write an essay on a pre-defined subject about the book. Students can not directly apply for these scholarships. Scholarship applications must be submitted by the applicant's English teacher according to strict guidelines available on the Penguin website.

Youth Foundation Scholarships

The Youth Foundation awards Hadden Scholarships to exceptionally worthy high school seniors who don't have the financial means to attend college. The Youth Foundation requires a minimum GPA of 3.5 and also looks carefully at the student's character, scholastic records, extra-curricular activities and employment history. To apply for this scholarship you must also demonstrate a documentable financial need. You also need a written recommendation from a teacher, principal, coach or school adviser.

Dell Scholars Program

Dell Computer Corporation sponsors the Dell Scholars Program. Graduating seniors awarded the Dell Scholars grant receive $20,000. Dell offers 250 scholarships per year. Among the things Dell looks for is a student's determination to succeed, goals and plans for success, self-motivation, and a demonstratable financial need. To apply for this grant, you must be enrolled in an official AVID program, have a cumulative GPA of 2.4, and be enrolled in an approved MSDF college college prep program for at least 2 years.
