Fashion Illustration Portfolios

Fashion illustration portfolios are made to showcase your work as well as provide background information. Taking the time to have a professional portfolio of your best projects is a major key in selling your art and gaining more clients. Here are some sections that should be included in a fashion illustration portfolio.

Resume/CV

The first section should have your resume with contact information, objectives, education, references and any previous employment that relates to your career. Your CV should also be in this section, listing your publication credits, awards and other work samples. This is essentially a cover letter that shows the reader what they will see paging through the rest of your portfolio.

Publications/Tear Sheets

This part of fashion illustration portfolios contain tear sheets from any magazines, books, websites or other media that your work has been featured in.

Other Projects

If you do not have tear sheets, such as in when you worked with a designer for a show and not a publication, include some samples drawings. Illustrators should always ask for a copy of the finished design when doing projects which will not be published in mainstream media to put in their individual fashion illustration portfolios.

Awards/Recognition

The final section should have any awards, certificates or letters of recognition that you have received relating to your career. This can also include reference letters and/or thank-you notes from notable designers or editors that you have worked with in the past.

Other Samples

Finally, if you are bidding on a project or applying to work for a publication that is different from your usual body of work, including a few extra samples based on their style and tone shows that you can do the job. This optional section of fashion illustration portfolios can be removed or changed based on your current needs.
