Submit A College Application

Avoid confusion when filling out your college application.

The first step to college is completing the application, which can be complicated. Asking for a variety of items and using convoluted wording, a college application can quickly become a chore. Use these simple steps to get started and pave the way to a better education.

Instructions

1. Meet with your counselor or adviser.

Schedule a meeting with your high school counselor or adviser. Ask her opinion on colleges specializing in your field of interest and price range. Take application forms if available and request your transcripts; you will need one transcript per application, so order them accordingly. Do not send an unofficial transcript when applying to a college.

2. Take necessary exams.

Take exams necessary for admission. Most colleges require students to take the SAT or ACT before admission. Take the PSAT first to get a taste of the format, questioning and style of the SAT. Have the testing center send your score directly to colleges you are interested in. Look at application requirements before sending your score to ensure it is high enough.

3. Avoid termination of your application by turning it in on time.

Fill out the application form for the college you are applying to. Available online or in hard copy, applications must be completed and returned by a designated date. Do not delay; late or incomplete applications may be ignored, regardless of your qualifications and academic achievements. Review the completed form to ensure all information is correct. Let an adult or counselor look it over.

4. Use a folder to keep everything together.

Create a checklist of items required for your application. Letters of recommendation, an application fee, essay, transcripts and profiling by the high school counselor may be requested. Buy a folder to keep all the items. Put it in an accessible place that is covered to prevent spills, stains and tears.

5. Mail information when it has all been gathered.

Organize the information after it has been gathered. Put it in a large envelope or envelope provided by the college and mail it. Make sure to address the admissions office when writing the address. If you are submitting your application online, print and review it. If all information is correct and all questions are answered, complete the application. Mail all other items requested by the school.

6. Call admissions to ensure your application was received.

Note the date you sent your application. Call the college in a few days to ensure they received your application and ask if there is anything else needed. Ask for an estimated reply date; most colleges answer in two to three weeks, but if your application is mailed at a peak time, it may take longer.
