Biomedical Training Schools

The biomedical field is rapidly developing and presents many career opportunities. Biomedical research helps the field of medicine to evolve, producing new techniques or strategies for treating diseases, which can either lower the cost or improve the effectiveness of medical care. There are a variety of different types of degrees you can receive from schools that offer biomedical training.

Southern California Institute of Technology

The Southern California Institute of Technology, located in Anaheim, California, offers a seven-month-long program. Classes are primarily taught at night, for the convenience of working students. In your time in the program you can expect to become familiar with the tools and electronics commonly used in hospitals and small clinics. There are three fields of study in this program, all of which emphasize different aspects of the biomedical field: human anatomy, biomedical instrumentation and electronic fundamentals.

National Institute of Health

For students already working on a degree in a biomedical field, the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Washington, D.C., offers a highly competitive summer internship program. Applicants should be at least 16 years old and be currently enrolled in school. The program lasts approximately eight weeks, during which time students live at the NIH. The internship is designed to provide students with one-on-one training with leading researchers in the biomedical field.

Case Western Reserve University

Located in Cleveland, Ohio, Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine offers a Biomedical Sciences Training Program as part of its biomedical Ph.D. program. Coursework includes cell and molecular biology and a good deal of time in a laboratory doing research. During the first year of the program, students rotate between various labs at the school, learning what sort of research each lab does and deciding which lab will be the best fit for the training they will receive over the next several years.

Devry University

Devry University is a leading technical training program with locations all over the United States. It offers a degree program in biomedical engineering and asserts that degree holders have a variety of career paths they can follow. Devry focuses primarily on the technical aspects of the biomedical field, preparing candidates to develop products and technologies, such as pacemakers, lasers and X-ray equipment. Devry offers a bachelor's degree, with emphasis in biomedical engineering technology.
