What To Do To Become A Career Counselor

There are many different jobs that you can do. Helping people figure out which job they would like to do can be something you choose to do for your own career. A career counselor is someone who helps others learn about their own likes and dislikes, and who helps people figure out what they'd most like to do with their lives. You might decide to be a career counselor if you really care about people and you want to see them make good decisions. It can also be an interesting profession because you can learn about many types of careers.

1. Get a college degree. In order to be a career counselor, your degree should be in counseling, social work or civics. Some large colleges offer a degree in career counseling. You might want to consider the University of Miami, San Diego State or the University of Minnesota. These three schools offer great career counseling degrees.








2. Find a career counseling firm that is hiring. You can even work your up from a receptionist or an assistant in a career counseling firm. Many times, a career counselor can be make up to $30,000 a year as a starting wage, but you may not make that right way. You will need to start slowly and work your way up.








3. While you are working as a career counselor, learn as much as you can about personality tests, counseling and various careers on the market. There are different levels of career counseling, depending on where you work. You could work in a high school and talk to students about what they'd like to be when they grow up. You could work at a college, where you will give more specific information about careers and find appropriate majors for students. You might also work as an adult career counselor. Here, you will give ability tests and match people's preferences to the careers that they'd like to do.


4. After you have worked for a career counseling firm for awhile, you might decide to start your own career counseling firm. However, think carefully before you do this. Research all the necessary steps to starting your own business and secure finances for your business. Going into business with another career counselor can be a good idea as well.


5. Each day as a career counselor, no matter if you work for a firm, a school, or for yourself, you will talk to people about the various careers that they might be interested in. You will give them information about careers, talk to them about their likes and dislikes, and counsel people as to which careers will fit them the best. Also, you will discuss with them the education and experience that is needed for various careers,and help them find out get that education or experience.
