The Best Architecture & Design Schools

View at Harvard University.

There are a number of architecture and design schools in the United States, and most are quite prestigious and selective. Most architecture graduate schools require applicants to supply a portfolio of work, take the GRE exams and have an excellent academic record. Obtaining a Master's degree in Architecture (MA Architecture) typically takes about three years.

Harvard University

Harvard's Graduate School of Design offers three main areas of concentration for MA Architecture students: architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design. A doctorate and a post-grad certificate are also offered.

The 3 1/2-year program boasts small class sizes and studio workshops, and places an emphasis on challenging architectural norms and conventions---innovation is king here.

Award-winning professors, such as Erika Naginski and Toshiko Mori, the Robert P. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture, teach at Harvard's GSD.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Reflecting its science bent, MIT's Department of Architecture Master's programs include a traditional Master's of Architecture, a Master's of Science in Architecture Studies and a Master's of Science in Building Technology. Doctoral degrees and certificates are also available from the school.

The programs at MIT can take 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years, depending on how much architectural study an applicant has undertaken as an undergraduate student. MIT's program takes pride in looking at architectural and urban planning issues ranging from such places like Calcutta, to MIT's backyard of Boston, Massachusetts.

Columbia University

As its name suggests, Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation trains students to design and plan, while also being mindful of a building or city's history.

Columbia's master's programs include: Architecture, Urban Design, Historic Preservation, Real Estate Development and Urban Planning. A special master's degree is also offered in the Science in Critical, Curatorial and Conceptual Practices in Architecture. Doctoral and certificate programs are offered, as well. While emphasizing the importance of history, the school also claims to place importance on training designers who can tackle the architectural and planning problems of the future.
