Accreditated Medical Schools

Medical School's Preparation

Accredited medical schools are regulated to ensure that their curriculums and programs produce quality doctors. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) is recognized as the "accrediting authority on medical education programs" and is sponsored by the Association of American Medical College and the American Medical Association. As of 2010, LCME has accredited 132 medical schools in the United States.

Loma Linda University School of Medicine

Founded in 1909 in Southern California, Loma Linda University School of Medicine (LLUSM) is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian institution. Emphasis on Christian compassion supplements LLUSM's medical curriculum. Students who attend are required to take religion courses and spend the first two years of medical training in the classroom. Students experience hands-on training during medical rotations in the third and fourth years of school.

Students at LLUSM have opportunities to become involved in the school's Social Action Community Health System and Students for International Mission Service programs. Participation in these programs allows students to serve persons who have little access to medical care. Loma Linda University holds Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation. Loma Linda University School of Medicine is accredited through Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

Howard University College of Medicine

Established in 1868 in Washington D.C. after the end of the American Civil War, Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM) is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Recognizing that freed slaves would require health care, the founders of the college endeavored to train physicians that would serve this particular population.

Focus on training physicians who come from communities with few health care professionals is still a focus of HUCM. In addition to a medical degree, students can choose a dual PhD/MD degree and BS/MD Degree. Howard University has accreditation through the Middle States Association of Secondary Education and Colleges. LCME accredits the Medical School.
