Selecting one or more schools at which you'd like to attend college is only a first step. There will be plenty of other people who also want to gain entrance to the same colleges you prefer. Fortunately, you can take some steps to increase your chances of acceptance to colleges. The more time and energy you invest toward your goal, the more likely it will be that you will get an acceptance letter.
Instructions
1. Take academic risks in high school by taking advanced classes, especially in math and science. Keep your grades in the A and B range, depending on the grade point average qualifications of the colleges you are interested in attending.
2. Do your best on college entrance exams such as the ACT or SAT because your scores have a bearing on whether you gain acceptance to college or not. You can purchase preparatory manuals or sign up for a class that can help you prepare for either exam and increase your chances of doing well.
3. Communicate frequently with adults who will be able to write letters of recommendation for your college applications. Allow them to get to know you. Tell them about your interests, pursuits and goals. The more they know about you, the easier it will be for them to write a letter that speaks to who you are as a person.
4. Enroll in and complete a community college class during the summer before your senior year of high school. This will show that you are ready to do more advanced work.
5. Participate in extracurricular activities without compromising your academics. If you already know what field of study you want to pursue in college, try to get a local internship in the summer. Both extracurricular activities and internship experience will look positive on your college applications.
6. Take the time to sit down and read over each college application carefully. When writing essays, don't hastily scribble out whatever comes to your mind and submit it. Prepare a rough draft and come back to it later and make revisions. Make an effort to paint a picture of yourself as an individual.
7. Research each college and decide if it is a good fit for you. Use the information in college interviews to make your case for why they should admit you.
