Taking a variety of science courses provides important knowledge for potential nursing students.
Nurses need post-secondary education, with requirements varying depending on location and the specific qualification being sought. For example, nursing assistants complete at least 75 hours of state-approved training while registered nurses may hold a bachelor's or master's degree. Regardless of final education level, each one begins by obtaining a high school diploma. Taking the right high school courses increases the chance of acceptance in a nursing program following graduation, while providing an opportunity to form a firm foundation of knowledge in important areas.
Language Arts
Four years of English classes while in high school ensures a strong command of both oral and written language. Nurses need excellent communication skills to deal with patients, co-workers and employers. Lives often depend on accurate and specific communication between nurses and other people. In addition to literature and composition, some colleges require speech.
Math
Taking at least three years of math provides the necessary skills for advanced science courses taken at the high school or college level. Some students complete such work during college, but taking as many courses as possible in high school gives you the best head start on requirements. Complete algebra and geometry during high school, at a minimum, suggests the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Science
Science is the basis of many nursing courses in college, so this is an important area of preparation for high school students. Plan on taking biology, chemistry and physics. Other possibilities include earth science, physical science, anatomy and physiology and nutrition. Computer science or technology courses also fall in this category.

Prerequisites vary by college, so checking out the specific requirements of colleges you wish to attend early on provides you the best opportunity to fulfill all requirements. In addition to English, math and science courses, nurses demonstrate understanding and tolerance of a wide variety of people and situations. Social studies courses, psychology and sociology all teach such concepts. Foreign language may be necessary for high school graduation or college entrance as well, and helps nurses communicate with patients whose first language is not English. Volunteering at nursing homes or hospitals also provides important hands-on learning opportunities for potential nursing students while demonstrating commitment to the field.
