A career in law is prestigious, exciting and important within society. Becoming a lawyer is a time-intensive process and typically takes at least 8 years: four years as an undergraduate student, three years in law school and a year or more for studying and passing the bar examination. Taking courses in order to pursue a degree in law may take time, as applying to law school and getting accepted is a vital step.

1. Decide if a career as a lawyer is right for you. In addition to the strict educational requirements, lawyers have to pass legal examinations in order to practice. These exams vary from state to state and may take a long period of time for preparation and study. Lawyer positions are incredibly competitive and coveted, primarily due to the sheer number of students who graduate from law school annually.
2. Apply to law schools with departments for the specialization you would like to pursue. Applying for more than one program will increase your chances of getting accepted. Be aware of the requirements for applying, including specific classes needed at the undergraduate level, a high grade point average, extracurricular activities, internships, relevant job experience and high test scores.
3. Sign up for courses that are relevant to your speciality, whether it is bankruptcy, immigration, environmental, intellectual property or another branch of law.
