A variety of scholarships and grants are available to students pursuing a career as a counselor or social worker. National organizations are the best source for scholarships available to students throughout the United States. Some social worker and counseling scholarships and grants help with a student's tuition, while others help to pay for needed supplies such as textbooks.
American Counseling Association Foundation
The American Counseling Association Foundation provides scholarship assistance to students pursuing a career in counseling. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an annual essay contest. Two scholarships of $1,500 and eight scholarships of $500 are awarded each year. Students must be pursuing a degree at the graduate level in order to be eligible for entry. All entries must be received before the annual deadline of January 10.
American School Counselor Association
The American School Counselor Association offers annual scholarship assistance to students pursuing a career in school counseling. ASCA scholarships are awarded in the amount of $1,000. To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a master's degree and must be attending school on a full-time basis. The annual deadline for application is October 14. Preferential consideration may be given to applicants who belong to a minority ethnic group.
National Association of Social Workers Foundation
The National Association of Social Workers Foundation offers several scholarships to future counselors and social workers who are pursuing a master's degree or Ph.D. Scholarships are awarded in amounts of up to $2,000. To be eligible, applicants must be graduate students pursuing a degree related to social work and must be members in good standing of the National Association of Social Workers Foundation. Application materials must be received by the annual deadline of March 31.
Council on Social Work Education
The Council on Social Work Education offers several educational grant programs for students pursuing study related to social work and counseling. The Carl A. Scott Memorial Fund is awarded in amounts of up to $500 to students whose research is related to social justice and equity. The CSWE Scholars Program awards research grants to students pursuing a Ph.D. related to social work. The Minority Fellowship Program provides support to doctoral candidates who plan to work with minority populations.
