Find High School Diploma Records

Find High School Diploma Records

Unlike birth, marriage and death records, information about high school diploma recipients is not readily available to the public. High schools will regularly confirm diploma records to employers and authorized representatives of community colleges, universities and the U.S. Military, however. For instance, a school might verify a student's name and graduation date, which is helpful, since some people intentionally lie about their education.

Instructions

1. Contact the state department of education, particularly if you want general statistics. Nonprofit organizations (e.g., manhattan-institute.org) also collect information about high school graduation or diploma records from private and public schools.

2. Request a sealed official transcript. Like post-secondary schools, high schools provide graduates with transcripts that identify years of attendance, courses and final grades.

3. Verify an individual's graduation directly with the high school. Most high schools disclose information only to authorized entities or people. For example, you might receive verification if you are a potential employer and enclose an authorization for released signed by the graduate.

4. Register with a background-check company that verifies education history, like National Student Clearinghouse. Although countless companies perform background checks (name, address, criminal history, social security number), make sure that education records are included in the search.

5. Research the high school's accreditation. For instance, a person might attend an online high school and receive a diploma from an unaccredited school. Some programs, like John Adams Virtual School, issue high school diplomas within a few weeks.
