Medical coding is a fast-growing career. Hospitals and medical practices are screaming for more people. Medical coders and billers who have worked for a few years will tell you the same thing: certification is important. It means more money and more opportunities. Huge sign-on bonuses are even being offered for qualified medical coding specialists. So where do you go to get career training?
Instructions
1. First things first-have a diploma. If you didn't graduate from high school, you need to go back and get your G.E.D. This is a must!
2. Start with classes. If you want an intense one-week course, check out the Certified Coder Boot Camp offered by the Coding Specialists.
3. Get free online training. CBT offers online videos that you can learn from. Some are demos, but will get you started right.
4. Become a Certified Coding Assistant. This is the basic training expected by employers. A CCA has passed a national exam-taking it should be your first step. You can learn about the exam, study and register at AHIMA.
5. Become a Certified Coding Specialist. After you pass the CCA exam, your next step is to prepare for the CCS exam. This shows employers you are skilled in classifying medical data. AHIMA has information on the CCS training and exam.
6. Become a Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based. This certification is like CCS but focuses on working in a doctor's office instead of a hospital.
