Minnesota Colleges With Photography Programs

Photography schools and colleges

Professional photographers work in a variety of areas such as advertising, fashion, journalism, fine arts, and more. Individuals who are considering entering this career path should first gain the necessary fundamental skills and knowledge needed to understand the art of taking, printing, and manipulating the photographed image. Potential photography students will find a variety of postsecondary or college-level programs in the state of Minnesota. These programs are designed to help the beginning photography student to build and refine abilities while preparing for an entry-level career.

Minnesota's Brown College

Brown College, located on two separate Minnesota campuses, offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in digital photography. Students in this 36-month program will take 12 quarters and 180 credits of combined photography and academic curricula. Specialized photography classes include studio and location equipment use, computer software for digital photography and digital printing techniques. Additionally, students must complete general education (academic) requirements. This program is offered by Brown's School of Design and can only be taken at the Mendota Heights campus. Potential students can discover if they are qualified for admission by taking the school's online candidate survey.

All degree programs require coursework in both 35 mm and digital photography and include classes in lighting techniques, darkroom, fashion photography, portraiture and more. The associate degree is a 4-semester 64-credit program that includes specialized photography courses, general education requirements and an internship experience. Like the associate, the diploma program is also 4 semesters of study. Diploma students will take photography and general education classes to total 52 semester credit hours. The certificate option is a 2-semester 29-credit photography program. Students must supply their own 35 mm camera, digital SLR camera, professional light meter and additional related supplies. The school does have an articulation program with Metropolitan State University and Bemidji State University for students interested in obtaining a bachelor's degree.
