Master of Education graduates can pursue a variety of jobs, some in teaching and others in administration and counselling. School principals and vice-principals often possess graduate degrees in education, as do many school guidance counsellors. An M.Ed makes students more attractive to employers than a Bachelor of Education alone, and may be a good investment for those looking for a bright future in education.
Teaching
Teaching is the most popular career choice for M.Ed holders. Although there are some M.Ed degree programs geared toward administration, such as Master of Education in Administration, most M.Ed programs are designed to prepare the graduate for a career teaching students. M.Ed graduates usually teach in the specific program they trained for, for example in early childhood education or art education, unless additional credentials are obtained.
Educational Writing
Some M.Ed graduates work as educational writers. Educational writers produce textbook content, curriculum guides, and other educational content for use in the classroom. Educational writers may work in-house with a publisher, or as self-employed freelancers. The level of education required in the subject depends on both the subject and the grade level. High school textbooks are usually written by educators with experience in the subject, whereas elementary materials are usually written by childhood education experts rather than experts in the subject area.
Administration
Administration is traditionally the domain of the more educated and experienced teachers. Many school administrators possess advanced credentials, such as an M.Ed or Doctorate of Education. An M.Ed holder has a better opportunity at becoming a school principal or vice principal than does her counterpart with only a B.Ed. A teacher who takes an M.Ed specifically in administration has an even better shot at an administrative job than an ordinary M.Ed.
Counselling
Sometimes, M.Ed graduates take jobs as school guidance counsellors or career counsellors. This may be the case with M.Eds who have a background in psychology or sociology. The combination of education and social science gives them a unique perspective on the psycho-social problems people can encounter in an educational setting. This combination of degrees also prepares students to counsel students in matters of post-secondary education and the working world.
