Good Interior Design Schools

For those who dream of a career planning the layout and interior spaces of homes and buildings, a degree in interior design from a good school can be your ticket to success in the field. There are several schools that consistently appear highly in the rankings put out by Design Intelligence and the Top Innovation and Design School rankings by Business Week.


University of Cincinnati


The University of Cincinnati in Ohio has an interior design program that many in the field consider to be the best in the nation. The school offers a Bachelor of Science degree that takes most students five years to complete. Concepts of critical and imaginative thinking along with visual and verbal communication, use of technology and problem-solving skills are emphasized in the program. Six quarters of co-op work are required, giving students a chance to gain hands-on experience in the field.


Pratt Institute


Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in interior design. The eight-semester program includes required courses such as Light/Color/Design, Survey of Art, Color and Materials, Construction Systems and Furniture Design. The campus includes a Materials Library for study and checkout of educational materials. The school also offers a Master of Science degree in interior design where professionals can gain additional education in the field.


Arizona State University


Arizona State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in interior design through the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. According to the school's website, it consistently remains one of the top 10 programs in the country. Students can focus in either commercial or residential interior design and take classes in topics such as design history, political and economic climates, design theory, and communications. Classes are held in the Herberger Institute for Design and Arts, which houses state-of-the-art facilities and technology vital for the field of interior design.








Kansas State University








The College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in interior design that places an emphasis in learning the creative and technical skills to turn a concept into reality. The program lasts for four years with classes in interior space planning, graphic presentation, computer-aided design and drafting, project administration, building codes and construction systems offered. All students in the second year of the program are required to purchase a laptop meeting the program's specifications. Sample class titles include History of Interior Design, Metalsmithing, Appreciation of Architecture, Housing and Its Environment and Historic Fabric Design.
