Nurse anesthetists work in a variety of clinical settings.
Nurse anesthesia is a growing field within the nursing profession. Nurse anesthetists perform many of the same functions as that of an anesthesiologist. A master's degree is the standard degree in nurse anesthesia, although a number of programs are now beginning to offer a doctoral degree in the field as well.
University of Detroit Mercy
The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) in Detroit, Michigan, offers one of the oldest nurse anesthesia programs in the nation. Although UDM has been offering the nurse anesthesia program only since 2004, the program's origins trace back to 1942, when the school was known as the Mt. Caramel Mercy Hospital. The program requires courses in the classroom setting plus additional clinical training and a project that is akin to the master's thesis required by many schools. The program at UDM can be completed in two and a half to three and a half years. Areas covered by the UDM program includes studies in anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, pathophysiology and nursing principles.
