Living and studying in a different country is an excellent opportunity for young people. A teen study abroad program gives a young person a chance to learn another language, immerse themselves in a different culture, meet new people and have fun. 1. Decide what length of time you want to be abroad. Programs usually range from a few weeks to the whole academic year. Semester programs which are about three or four months may also be available. Some programs offer a summer study aboard option.
2. Discuss goals with your school counselor. There are study abroad programs which focus primarily on language. Other programs include volunteer work and learning extensively about the culture. Before you select a program determine if you will receive school credits.
3. Review finances. Costs of programs will vary depending on length of stay, country you are traveling to and living arrangements. Talk with directors of studying abroad programs to understand all costs involved before choosing a program. Costs will likely include airfare, tuition and possibly food and lodging depending on the program.
4. Research countries. Consider what culture and language you are interested in learning about. Review health and safety information on a country you are considering.
5. Evaluate living arrangements. Some students studying abroad may live with host families. Other options include foreign language camps. Some students will live in a large city, others in a more rural setting. Think about the type of living situation you are comfortable with.
6. Contact programs. Ask for referrals to programs from teachers and school counselors. Talk to other students who have studied abroad and ask what programs they went through. Contact organizations such as The American Institute for Foreign Study and Youth for Understanding. They list programs available to teens.
7. Select a program. Once you have decided on a location and program put in an application. Learn all you can about the country you are traveling to. Read books and start to learn the language. Be aware of any vaccinations you may need. Get a passport.
