The maximum amount of financial aid you are eligible to receive is not a set amount -- instead, it is based on your income, dependents, course load and year in school. Two students living in the same dorm room taking the same of classes with the same grade point average might not even receive the same amount of aid depending on their job status and whether or not they are dependents of their parents. The only way to ensure you get the maximum amount of student aid available to you based on your financial situation is to fill out your free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) which is required for any student looking to obtain financial aid.
Instructions
1. Obtain a paper copy of the FAFSA from the financial aid department of your college campus or fill out and submit the application online. Enter all of the information required, which includes your personal, financial, student and tax information.
2. Complete your FAFSA as early as possible. There is not a nationwide deadline for FAFSA application submissions but each state does have its own deadlines for student aid applications, which means submitting yours late could cost you certain financial aid awards. Once your application is processed by the federal government the results are passed on to your school and your aid is determined and awarded.
3. Speak with a financial aid counselor on your college campus regarding additional aid. If your FAFSA application nets you only so much financial aid and you still need more, your financial aid counselor will provide you with scholarship and grant forms to fill out in an effort to obtain more student aid.
