Military Vocational Scholarships

The United States military provides a great number of opportunities for those who join. There's steady pay, room and board, job training, and in the case of many personnel, the opportunity to earn educational scholarships because of their position in the military. These scholarships may apply to certain military branches, but they may also apply to spouses, children and family members of military personnel who are trying to get into a college or vocational school.

Military Family Scholarship

The Fort Hood Area Military Family Member Scholarship Fund is available to the children and dependents of an active, retired or deceased member of the military assigned to Fort Hood or residing in a four-county area. The recipient must be a high school senior who is planning on enrolling in a vocational school or a four-year college after graduating from high school. The student will need to submit, among other things, his transcripts, an essay regarding how he sees himself applying his education in five to 10 years, and three letters of recommendation.

Post 9/11 GI Bill

The GI Bill (which provided the opportunity for servicemen to go to college or a vocational school after they'd completed a certain amount of time serving their country) was modified after 9/11. Now the benefits of the GI Bill apply to any soldier on active duty, but they may be transferred to a soldier's spouse once the soldier has served six years and agreed to serve another four. After 10 years of service the benefits of the GI Bill may be transferred to any of the soldier's spouses or dependent children.
