Costume design courses can typically be found at schools that have a fashion department. That being said, not every school with a fashion major has costume design as a major. To get a degree in costume design, you need to go to a school that has courses in costume design and technology.
University of North Carolina School of the Arts
The School of Design & Production at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (formerly the North Carolina School of the Arts) has a costume design program. Students in the program learn all aspects of design and technoloy both in and out of the classroom. Students partcipate in actual productions to enhance what they learn during the program. The school offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in costume design and costume technology.
Tisch School of the Arts
The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University has a costume design program. Students in the costume design program learn about costume design theory, technique, history and character development. Students learn both in and out of the classroom and get hands-on experience by participating in actual productions for which their performance is critiqued. The program is taught over the course of three years.
Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising
The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) is located in Los Angeles, California. Its film and TV costume design program teaches students develop a character's wardrobe from a script, costume design history, costume and material sourcing and technology and conceptualizing ideas. The school's being located close to Hollywood allows for insightful field trips to studios and costume houses. Students also get the opportunity to pair up with students from the film school for various collaborations.
University of California Los Angeles
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has a course on design in theater and entertainment media. Students in this intensive program must complete all 104 required credits for the degree, of which 84 are graduate level. In addition to this, students are required to complete several projects for which their work is critiqued. The entire course is designed to be completed over three years. Students learn everything from the practical application of costume design to the history of costumes in film and TV.
