A prosthetist is one who works to design and fit artificial limbs on people who have either lost limbs to disease or accidents or have been born without a limb. The work combines science and art, enabling people to live full lives.
Instructions
1. Have a desire to help people if you want to become a prosthetist. You must be compassionate in order to serve people by helping them overcome serious challenges.
2. Go to a four year college. Take courses in the health sciences. You must have knowledge in anatomy, physiology and psychology. Learn to communicate well and work well with others. You must be able to work as a team with physiotherapists and occupational therapists if you want to become a prosthetist.
3. Get a job at a prosthetics company. You must complete two years of on the job training in order to become a prosthetist. Training will take you into hospitals, clinics and nursing homes to evaluate patients who need artificial limbs. While learning to make prosthetics, you must become familiar with biomechanics, technology and the materials used.
4. Develop your creativity. Making prosthetic limbs is both a science and an art. You must be able to take detailed measurements, create a plaster cast of the limb needed and then instruct a technician to get it produced. You must design and fit artificial limbs to each individual.
5. Be organized since prosthetists complete a great deal of paperwork. You must write reports on the patient's progress in using the artificial limb. You must write detailed accounts of the prosthesis for insurance companies.
