Many literary magazines make their home on college campuses. If your campus doesn't already have a venue for young writers, you can start your own. Even if a literary magazine is already published at your college you can still start a new one that meets the needs of an underserved literary niche.
Instructions
1. Recruit interested students. A literary magazine needs editors, writers and graphic designers. Some staffs also include artists and business managers.
2. Raise money to pay for your first issue. Many colleges offer funding to student publications. Raise additional funds from sponsors and by applying for grants.
3. Plan the details of your magazine. Decide whether the content will be targeted or broad and determine what combination of fiction, poetry and non-fiction to include. Estimate your frequency of publication and the length of each issue. Think about how the issues will be presented: online, stapled or perfect bound.
4. Organize your publication. Assign duties to members of the staff and create an editorial board. Make sure that everyone is clear about their responsibilities.
5. Create submission guidelines and publicize them in order to recruit new writers.
6. Establish a selection process for reviewing submissions. Assign decision-making responsibilities to individual section editors, committees or the editorial board.
7. Layout your first issue and send it to press. Work with your printer so that the file you submit meets their standards.
