Online food-training courses often concern safety.


A variety of companies offer nationally recognized online food-training programs with curricula focusing on safety and vocations in the food industry. These programs follow the same principles taught in a classroom setting, and often satisfy state and county requirements for employment as a food-service employee.








Safety


Most online food-training programs center around food safety and focus on cross-contamination, safe food-handling procedures and the identification and prevention of food-borne illnesses. Some courses offer in-depth instruction in bacteriology, food-related health legislation and the health-management issues of large companies.








Agriculture


Classes that examine agricultural procedures provide training in microbiology, harvesting, food traceability and organics. These programs also offer instruction in proper agricultural practices and what to expect from agricultural audits.


Managerial


Online food-manager training focuses on the supervisory responsibilities of food safety. These include instruction on the flow of food through a food-service establishment, pest management and active control of critical food-borne sickness issues.


HACCP


The hospitality industry's standard program for food-service safety management, hazard analysis and critical control point training teaches students monitor health concerns in the restaurant, defines standard operating procedures regarding food sickness outbreaks and identifies the three classifications of recipes.


Alcohol


A requirement for employment in most restaurants, alcohol-management training augments food service employee certification. Alcohol-management training teaches protect food-service employees from alcohol-related liability issues, dealing with alcohol-related disturbances in the restaurant and proper methods of refusing alcohol sales.


Cost


As of August 2010, online food training costs $15 to over $125, depending on the level of instruction. Recertification fees vary, depending on the program, but many certifications, such as the ServSafe program, last up to five years from date of issue.
