Change Your FAFSA When You Change Schools
When filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, applicants must input school codes that correspond to the schools they are considering attending or do currently attend. The financial aid office of any school can give you its federal code, and a look-up is available in the online application. Each year, recipients of federal aid must fill out a new FAFSA with the information from the past year's tax return and information about any other circumstances that may have changed regarding their financial standing. When changing schools, the student must update the FAFSA to reflect the new school.
Instructions
1. Log on to FAFSA online. If you need to edit your school information for the current academic year or a year for which your FAFSA has already been processed, click the "Start" button next to "Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA." To fill out a FAFSA for a new academic year in which you'll need to change the school code, click "Start" next to "Open My Saved FAFSA or Correction Application."
2. Enter your identifying information. The FAFSA log-in is highly secure and you will have to provide your Social Security Number, your full name, date of birth and your Federal Student Aid PIN (which was given to you upon first filling out the FAFSA). You will also be asked to create a password and enter it twice for verification.
3. Click on "Step 6" located under the page header once you are logged in correctly to skip to the section on school codes.
4. Search for your new school code or enter it in line 102a. If you don't know what the code for your new school is, click on "Search" and the form will ask you the location and name of the institution. If you know the code, delete the code for your previous school and enter the correct one for your new school.
5. Submit the corrections by clicking "Next" at the bottom of the page. Then select "Save" and "Exit" to save the changes.
