If you want to attend a film school, you may be concerned about the cost of tuition, books and camera equipment necessary to participate. There are grants and scholarships available to attend film school, but you must familiarize yourself with where to find grants before you can begin the application process.
HFPA Grants
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association provides fellowships that can be administered to students for tuition, educational expenses or costs in producing a film project necessary to graduate. Students who are eligible are in film arts programs, including directing, screenwriting, producing, editing, acting and cinematography among other areas.
Schools
Schools often have scholarship programs available for film students. Financial aid departments are a good place to begin searching for funding and they may also have additional information on grants from private foundations.
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a variety of scholarships, fellowships and other awards available for students in film and screenwriting. Although these are highly competitive, their funding provides a significant amount of financial support.
Film Media Scholarships
Film media scholarships are available through the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation. The scholarship is available for graduate and undergraduate students, but do not exceed $10,000.
Oscars
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have a variety of scholarships, fellowships, and other awards available for students in film and screenwriting. Although these are highly competitive, their funding provides a significant amount of financial support.
Foundation Center database
Check the Foundationcenter.org database, which is available online with a subscription or at cooperating libraries at no charge. You can search the database for scholarships for film, the arts and other applicable areas.
