Students learn the basics of embroidery in textile designing.
Textile design is a burgeoning career in India. Students holding a degree in textile design work for fashion houses, apparel manufacturers, fashion designers, and boutiques, or start their own line of fashion. Several fashion-oriented colleges and institutions offer degree programs to interested students.
National Institute of Fashion Technology
The government of India started the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in 1986. With several locations all over India, NIFT is one of the premier institutions geared toward fashion and design management. The institute offers a four-year bachelor's in textile design. The curriculum introduces students to textile technology and CAD (computer-aided design), followed by quality analysis, weave design, marketing, and merchandising. Future professionals complete the program by undertaking a graduate project with a client, export house, or a nongovernmental organization (NGO). Many of these organizations work extensively to promote local handicrafts. The students provide them information about the latest techniques, contemporary designs, and fashion ideas.

Students attend classes in one of the many PAF locations, such as New Delhi, Jaipur, and Chennai. The program introduces students to such concepts as textile materials, design, yarn structure, resist-dyeing techniques (traditional methods of dyeing textiles), and textile-weaving.
