Foreign exchange scholarships help students see the world
Foreign exchange programs give high school students the opportunity to study abroad, where they can experience different cultures and traditions, learn a new language, and make friends from around the world. A truly enriching experience, foreign exchange programs are expensive, but scholarships can help deserving students fund their studies and have the adventure of a lifetime.
Yoshi Hattori Memorial Scholarship
The Yoshi Hattori Memorial Scholarship helps students study in Japan
To honor the memory of former exchange student Yoshi Hattori, a scholarship in his name is awarded annually, to help a student spend a year in Hattori's native Japan. The American Field Service (AFS) runs the scholarship and exchange program, which offers such varied experiences as, "Ritual tea ceremonies and graceful gardens and shrines,the world's first high-speed train and modern skyscrapers and an innovative society steeped in ancient culture," according to the AFS website. The scholarship covers the cost of study in Japan for one year, is merit-based, and designed to foster international peace and understanding.

Two Worlds United
Two Worlds United sends students to Portugal, among other countries
Students spending a year overseas through a program administered by Two Worlds United can apply for scholarships which range in value from $250 to $1,800. The organization sends students to Japan, Portugal, the Netherlands, France and other nations for semester, summer and year-long programs. Two Worlds awards scholarships on financial need, GPA, rank in high school class and answers to essay questions found in the program application materials.

Global Citizen Scholarship
AYUSA offers students the Global Citizen Scholarship
AYUSA (an acronym for academic year in the USA) began sending high schoolers abroad as foreign exchange students in 1980, seeking to foster "a more profound understanding of their important role in the global community" amongst participants. To help fund an overseas experience, AYUSA offers the Global Citizen Scholarship to seven individuals each year. Worth $2,000, the award is for those "resourceful and mature students who are passionate about international exchange, bettering their community and self-growth," according to the website. They can use it to fund semester, trimester and year-long programs.

Berlin Summer Scholarship
Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, a must-see for Summer Scholarship winners
Students wishing to study abroad in the German capital can apply for the Berlin Summer Scholarship, available through AYUSA. There is one annual award worth $1,000, for a month studying and experiencing the thriving city of Berlin. The winner of the scholarship must speak to fellow students and members of their community (before and after the time in Germany) about his experiences and the country itself. To assist in this task, the student must "share their passion for study abroad through winsome and creative presentations," according to AYUSA.
