Universities In California That Offer Engineering Programs

California has a wealth of universities from which to choose.

When it comes to getting an engineering degree, California has a wealth of universities from which to choose. If funding is a concern, the California State University system charges inexpensive tuition fees compared to other universities in the state. The University of California system also offers engineering programs with slightly higher tuition fees, but not as high as private institutions. But, some of the California's private schools that offer engineering programs are the cream of the crop and are ranked as some of the top schools in the United States.

California Polytechnic State University

The California State University system has a number of schools that offer engineering programs with tuition costs that are less than most schools in the state. In particular, California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, also called Cal Poly, has an array of engineering programs including aerospace, computer science, electrical, mechanical and civil. Ranked third by U.S. News & World Report among public university engineering programs, Cal Poly also was ranked high by Forbes.com as having alumni earning high median incomes. Both undergraduate and graduate programs are offered. Admissions to Cal Poly are highly competitive. In 2008 only 4,100 applicants were accepted out of a total 38,000 applications. Classes include a range of liberal arts, science and math in combination with laboratory work depending on the specific type of engineering.

Offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the University of California Berkeley is ranked one of the top public universities in California with highly competitive engineering programs. U.S. News & World Report ranked U.C. Berkeley as having the second best undergraduate engineering program. Classes are specific to the type of engineering program, for instance, the mechanical engineering program offers classes on non-linear dynamic systems and marine hydrodynamics.

Stanford University

A number of private universities in California offer good engineering programs. Stanford University is ranked one of the top schools with engineering programs, according to U.S. News & World Report. Among a number of programs offered are in the study of aeronautics, bioengineering and computer science. Some of the courses offered in computer science for instance are object-oriented systems design and a writing intensive senior project. And for the bioengineering concentration, courses include medical device innovation and form and function of animal skeletons.
