International Scholarship Resources

Italy is the destination for Italian Language Study Grant holders.

U.S. students have multiple international scholarship choices. The international travel scholarship stands out among them. It encourages and enables a student to travel abroad, usually to a particular region or country, for a particular purpose. Travel scholarships are available that honor national heritage, languages and traditions, architecture, history, music and other areas of study.

Italian Language Study Grant

The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) promotes Italian heritage, culture and traditions. The Order's Sons of Italy Western Foundation and Grand Lodge of California sponsor an Italian Language Study Grant for 30 days of summer immersion studies at a college in Italy, no monetary value specified. High school graduates in California, Nevada and Klamath Falls, Oregon, who are wholly or partly of Italian ancestry are eligible. A certified transcript and official certification of graduating class rank, SAT/PSAT/ACT scores, GPA, two letters of recommendation and proof of Italian or other foreign language studies are requirements. The applicant must also submit an essay of at least 200 words about his or her Italian origin, activities, work experience, aspirations and expectations for the grant.

The Fogle Cultural Travel Scholarship

Born of a romance between Professors David E. and Alice P. Fogle at Georgetown College in 1920, the Fogle Cultural Travel Scholarship sets an American scholar's sights on Europe. The Fogles encouraged students of a romance language to travel to and experience its country of origin. This scholarship gives the recipient funds to travel in western Europe to study foreign languages or other subjects like history, archaeology and architecture. Awarded on the basis of academic merit, the scholarship requires a 3.0 GPA. Applicants must be full-time, upper-class Georgetown College students. Their applications should outline the purpose and timetable of the proposed travel and how it will enhance their field of study. Scholarship funds of up to $1,500 in 2011, apply to air fare, room and board and conference fees. Recipients of the award have a "Fogle Scholar" designation.

Harold Powers World Travel Fund

The American Musicological Society advances research in music as its main mission. The society has an international membership drawn from more than 40 nations. Among the society's awards is the Harold Powers World Travel Fund, which enables Ph.D., and post-doctoral students to travel anywhere in the world to carry out work related to their dissertation or research. Applications take the form of a statement of up to 1,000 words that explains the research topic and plan, outlines an itinerary, lists research institutions and presents a budget. Applicants also need letters of support from two scholars. For 2012, the maximum value of the award was $1,000.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The congressionally funded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program opens the door to travel overseas for U.S. citizen undergraduates with Federal Pell Grant funding. The scholarship recognizes financial need, especially for students who are unlikely to travel abroad otherwise. The award requires at least four consecutive weeks in one country for a study abroad program that is eligible for credit at the student's U.S. college or university. In 2010, the average scholarship value was $4,000.
