Creating a circus ringmaster costume will require only a few items around your home, a quick trip to the costume store and a bit of imagination. Children as well as adults can wear a ringmaster costume. It's appropriate for school and can be worn on chilly Halloween nights.
Pants
Ringmasters typically wear black jodhpurs that balloon out around mid-thigh, but these are tricky to find or make. For an easier option, use a plain pair of black dress pants. This provides an economical and stress-free solution, since most people have plain black pants at home. If you can't find black dress pants, black sweat pants will work just as well.
Jacket
Most ringmasters wear a red jacket with a black collar and cuffs. If you have difficulty finding one, a plain red button-down shirt will work nicely. To create a black collar and cuffs, use a sheet of black felt. Trace the collar and cuffs onto the felt with a white pencil. Cut out the pieces and glue them onto the shirt with fabric glue. If you don't want to make this a permanent change, use safety pins to secure the black felt to the shirt's collar and cuffs.
Accessories
A ringmaster isn't a ringmaster without a black top hat. If you don't already own one, a costume or craft store will probably carry top hats around Halloween. If you need this costume at some other time of year, look around second-hand stores for a hat. Black riding boots look great with this costume, but black shoes will look nice if you have a hard time finding boots.
Most ringmasters wear a white ascot or a scarf tied around the neck and tucked down the front of the shirt. You can find these scarves at most Wal-Marts or perhaps a thrift store. A whip isn't necessary for this costume and would be inappropriate in school. Using black eyeliner, draw on a pencil-thin mustache with large curls at the end.
