Bryant Evaporator Coil Needed
Hi everyone, I just had my A/C serviced and my tech of many years told me that although my Bryant 3.5 ton is only 7 years old, the evaporator coil needs to be replaced. I contacted Bryant and they won't warranty it. I can purchase a coil for around $750 + installation, which is crazy expensive. Anyone know where I might be able to purchase this Bryant evaporator coil Part # 316224-759 at a discount? Is there a surplus dealer selling NOS (new old stock) or some warehouse going out of business somewhere? I'm in Florida. Thank you very much for any suggestions. R410A or R22? Actually, either way you're not going to beat 750. Most people would probably tell you your only option is to replace the system, so consider yourself lucky. Because R22 is being phased out and coils for R22 systems are like gold. all coils can be used for r22 just have to make sure the correct metering device is used if it is a txv. regardless of that as said, 750 is good price with labor. I should have been clearer. The price for the coil ONLY is about $750 PLUS installation. Can I simply measure the coil and use any new evaporator coil of the same size? There are many evaporator units for sale on ebay. Maybe I could just take the coil out? Thx. you can and you cant........First off you cant install yourself with out an epa license. Secondly, the metering device will matter if you have a piston the size of the orifice may be different and different manufacturers use different styles of orifices so you cant take the one from the old and put it in the new.....if a TXV then it must be sized properly for the outdoor unit and must be of the correct refrigerant. Thirdly, when you use a different coil you are mismatching the system which CAN, not always, cause problems. Thank you hvactechfw for your continued help. Since my compressor and air handler are in great shape, (only the coil is rusted), any thoughts on where can I buy a new evaporator coil (maybe NOS) at a discount? nope..... bryant does not sell online. You say the coil is rusty.........does it leak refrigerant? If no, then do you mean the drain pan is rusty? If yes then sometimes just the drain pan can be replaced, however, depending on your system it may still require removing the coil to do so and may be worth putting the whole coil in at that point instead of just the drain pan. However, after thinking about it, you said the system was 7, so, it would not be rusty as they used plastic drain pans 7 years ago. Only the coil is rusty. In fact, everything else looks terrific since I've have it regularly serviced since new. I am a real estate in a community of 614 properties and almost every property has the same issue of evaporator coils rusting. Bryant however denies there is a defect in their design or material and denied my request for a warranty unless an authorized Bryant dealer would say it's defective. (?) My a/c tech serviced it last week and that's when he explained to me the coil is getting clogged internally and will fail in the not too distant future. Coils don't deteriorate from the inside out. The refrigerant has oil in it that prohibits any corrosion on the inside of the coil. If their is a restriction inside the coil it is from a botched installation. Rust or corrosion on the outside isn't a problem until a leak forms in the coil. They don't rust or block up internally? Very interesting because my tech said the difference between the incoming air and the outgoing should be 17-20 degrees but I'm more than that...I think he said 23 degrees? Do I need a different tech? A 23 degree temp split isn't anything to get too worried about IMO especially if your coil isn't icing over. A high temp split can be caused by the blower fan running too slow (make sure the blower speed is set to mfg specs for the system), a low refrigerant charge or a malfunctioning TXV. All of which a competent tech can diagnose very easily. I would suggest you get a second opinion. Like said could be blower speed. But could be dirty blower. Find a new tech. Are could be dirty coil find a new tech both should have been checked. For your info the evap coil should be cleaned once a year and blower as needed agreed, I dont think the coil needs to be replaced just because you have a high split! If it were leaking that would be a different story. Your insights are very appreciated. I've got a call into another tech and will report back what he says. Should I be concerned that the coil is rusty? the end plates all get rusty.....overtime as the rust grows it will push into the copper tubes that go through the plates and cause a leak, but if it is not leaking currently then there is no real concern. No all coils will rust! Some more than others.
