Best semitransparent stain for deck in new england

Best semitransparent stain for deck in new england

I had a new pressure treated deck put up about 6 wks ago. it's about 600sq ft. I see so many choices, all of them claiming to be the best, that I dont know which to choose! Consumer reports rated behr good, but user reviews are pretty bad. AMD 2000 sounds good, but of course the people who are trying to sell a product arent gonna say well, it kinda sucks, but I think you should buy it anyway! The other thing is, when do I do it? should I wait till next spring, or do it this fall? on the AMD 2000 site it says that after the firs two times of applying the stain, you would do it every 4 years. every 4 years sounds pretty good. Does that sound realistic? thanks for the input. Every four years in a snow state does not sound realistic to me. You do want to give pressure treated wood time to dry unless you know it was kiln dried. Off the top of my head, I seem to recall something about six weeks being about the time it took the average piece of PT wood to get down to the right moisture content (12 - 18% is coming to mind but don't hold me to that) for staining. Semi-transparent stains are ok and will give you longer life than a transparent but the longest lasting coat will be the solid body stains. Around here, I see Cabbot, Sikkens, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Willams get the most praise. Personally, the brand consumer reports likes tends to get a lot of complaints around here and, as a result, I have never tried it. Generally, though, you get better products and advice from a paint store than you do a paint department. Well my chicken coop is done in all Behr stain. Its is solid white and took 3 coats to cover well. I did not put it on heavy and waited until dry in between coats. Its applied on a combiation or pressure treated and pine. I dont think my pressure treated wood was dry for 6 weeks. That would be impossible to do IMO. Expensive IMO. Was $34 bucks at the home store, but the coop guy said it was the best. He said every couple of years it needs to be re-stained. To me it looks like paint and I cant tell the difference. Log in after the winter and I will let you know how it held up....LOL Mike, solid stain looks a lot like paint - just thinner. Drying time from the PT process varies. How wet was it when installed? lots of sun and wind? or shade? 6 weeks to 6 months is normal...... it all depends on the circumstances.
