A crocheted scrubbie is handy at the kitchen sink.
You can make your own environmentally friendly kitchen scrubbies from sturdy nylon netting, found at fabric supply stores in a variety of colors. These scrubbies can be washed in a washing machine and dried in a dryer and will eliminate disposable sponges from your kitchen. Children over the age of 8 who have an interest in learning crochet will enjoy making these uncomplicated scrubbies, which make great handmade grandparent and teacher holiday gifts.
Instructions
1. Unfold the nylon netting on a flat surface, such as table. Cut the netting into a long, continuous 2-inch-wide strip by cutting inside the perimeter of the piece of fabric. Roll the nylon netting strip into a ball.
2. Knot a loop in the end of the netting strip. Insert the crochet hook in the loop. Grasp the strip strand with the hook and pull it through the loop to make one chain stitch. Repeat 14 times to make 15 chain stitches.
3. Insert the crochet hook in the third chain stitch from the hook. Grasp the netting strand and pull it through the chain. Grasp a second strand and pull it through the two loops on the hook to make one single crochet stitch. Repeat in each chain to make a row of single crochet stitches.
4. Make three chain stitches and turn the piece of work to the opposite side. Single crochet in the top loop of each single crochet in the previous row. Repeat this row until the scrubbie is 6 inches long.
5. Cut the yarn, leaving a 2-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last loop on the crochet hook to complete the crochet scrubbie.
