How High To Fill A Water Bed

A water bed consists of a framework -- usually constructed of wood or particle board -- that is sturdy enough to support the weight of a vinyl mattress filled with water. A water bed also has side rails that support the sides of the mattress and help it keep its shape once it is filled with water. Overfilling a water bed mattress can jeopardize the integrity of the side rails and supporting framework.

Preparation

Assemble the water bed framework and side rails according to the instructions that came with the bed. Ensure that all fasteners have been installed and tightened as per the instructions to make sure the bed does not come apart during the filling process.

Conditioner

Some water bed manufacturers may require or recommend the use of a water conditioner, which you can find in some retail stores and where water beds are sold. Add the conditioner to the mattress through the fill valve before you add the water. The amount of conditioner you add depends on the size of the mattress. Check the directions of the bottle for the correct quantity for your mattress.

Filling the Mattress

You can fill most water bed mattresses using a garden hose. It is recommended to fill the mattress with warm water so you can use the bed quicker. The mattress heating pad does a good job of maintaining the temperature of water in the mattress, but it may take several days for the heater to bring cold water up to a comfortable temperature. Locate a bathroom or kitchen faucet in your home that has an aerator attached to its underside. Remove the aerator with a pair of pliers and attach the garden hose to the exposed threads on the faucet. Screw the opposite end of the hose into the mattress filling valve.

Water Height

The mattress may take several minutes to fill, depending on the water flow rate and pressure in your home. Do not leave the hose unattended. If your home hot water tank runs out of hot water during the filling process, turn the faucet off and wait for the water in the tank to heat up again. When the water level starts to reach the top of the mattress, measure from the top of the bed side rails to the top of the mattress. Turn the water off when the height of the mattress is ¼ inch to ½ inch below the tops of the side rails.
